Happy feasts of Our Lady, our Mother Mary, under the titles of the Humility of Our Lady or Our Lady of Humility, and of Saints Alexius, Pope Leo IV and Marcellina!

  1. MAJOR FEAST: July 17: Feast of Our Lady of Humility

    Our Lady of Humility
«The most powerful weapon to conquer the devil is humility. For, as he does not know at all how to employ it, neither does he know how to defend himself from it.» - St. Vincent de Paul.

  2. July 17, 524: Our Lady in Portico in Campitelli, Italy

«The Sanctuary of Our Lady in the Portico in Campitelli is one of the most celebrated of Rome. It is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is located on the Campitelli Plaza in Rome, Italy. There is venerated at the church a precious image that was transported from the portico of the palace of the Roman matron, Galla Patricia Seveath, to whom the Virgin herself appeared on July 17, 524. The icon is 25 centimeters high. Mention is made of the miraculous appearance by Pope Gregory the Great. The image is known as Our Lady in the Portico, or the Madonna del Portico. The church where the icon was kept was known as Santa Galla Antiqua, and it used to be located just north of the Piazza Bocca della Verita and west of the Via Petroselli. The church was destroyed by Mussolini under pretext that the street should be widened. In the year 1618 the congregation was transferred to a new church known as Santa Maria in Campitelli, and the new church was finished in 1667. The work of the shrine is that of the architect Rainaldi. The new edifice was erected by vote of the people in thanksgiving for the preservation of the city from the pestilence of 1656, and was designed in the Baroque style. There are tall columns on the façade of the church that were intended to include statues, although the statues were never completed as originally planned. The icon of Our Lady of Campitelli is surrounded by an ornate shrine, and there is a stairway behind the display that allows a closer inspection of the famous icon. It is not open to the general public. Many times the sacred image of Our Lady of Campitelli has been carried in procession through the streets of Rome – the people invoking Mary’s protection against pestilence, epidemics and earthquakes. This image is also invoked under the title of Our Lady of Security, and two feasts are commemorated in Mary's honor: February second and July seventh.»

    Another narrative:

«The Sanctuary-Church of Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli is a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary on the narrow Piazza di Campitelli in the Rione Sant'Angelo in Rome, Italy. Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under a local Roman title of hers, Our Lady in the Portico, the church is a magnificent baroque ex voto: Pope Alexander VII had it built on the site of a previous church dedicated to Our Lady in Campitelli as a shrine for a small ancient icon of Our Lady that was believed by many people to have miraculously halted a terrible plague epidemic in 1656. The project was entrusted to Carlo Rainaldi, a pupil of Bernini: the pope laid the first stone on September 29, 1660 and granted the Icon the title of Romanæ Portus Securitatis. On January 14, 1662, the icon was transported to the new church still under construction. Tradition holds that a primitive oratory or church was founded at the site during the years 523–526, under the papacy of Pope John I. This structure was located near the Porticus Octaviæ (giving the church and icon its name of "Madonna of the Portico"). The structure was created to house a venerated 25 cm-high icon of the Virgin Mary and Saints Peter and Paul. Tradition claimed the icon appeared miraculously in 524 in the portico of the Roman matron St Galla, a Roman woman who was helping the poor, and it was said to be carried in processions since 590. The initial church structure was the no-longer extant Oratory of St Galla, located across the plaza from the present church, and which was attached to a hospital of the same name. Circa 1656, the city of Rome was ravaged by plague, and it was felt that the prayers to this icon, which had been carried in procession through the streets, had played a role in stopping the epidemic. This miraculous intervention prompted Pope Alexander VII to erect a grander church, instead of the ancient oratory, to house the icon. Construction took place between 1659 and 1667. The church was entrusted to the order of Clerics Regular of the Mother of God, that had been founded in Lucca. Since the time of King James Francis Edward Stuart of England, the church has been a center of devotion praying for the conversion of England back to Christianity. St Galla was the daughter of the Roman patrician Symmachus the Younger, who was appointed consul in 485. Galla was also the sister-in-law of St Boethius. Her father, St Symmachus, was unjustly condemned to death by Theodoric in 525. Galla was then married but was soon widowed, just over a year after marriage. It was believed that she grew a beard, to avoid further offers of marriage. Being wealthy, she decided to retreat to the Vatican Hill, and founded a hospital and a convent near St Peter's Basilica. Galla is reputed to have once healed a deaf and mute girl, by blessing some water, and giving it to the girl to drink. Galla remained there for the rest of her life, tending to the sick and poor, before dying of breast cancer in 550. Galla's biography is in the Dialogues of Pope St Gregory the Great. Galla is also believed to be the inspiration for the letter of St Fulgentius of Ruspe, titled De statu viduarum. The old church dedicated to St Galla (called "Santa Calla" - meaning "holy warm" - in the roman dialect), located south of the Montanara Plaza (where the building of Anagrafe is currently located) in the rione Ripa, was demolished by Mussolini in the 1930s to make way for the Via del Mare. A hospice for old people was adjoined to the church, and as a result, the elderly in Rome got the facetious nickname "Santa Calla". The new church dedicated to St Galla, located in the Ostiense quarter, was consecrated in 1940. The old church contained a picture of Our Lady, which represents a vision of Our Lady to St Galla and is now placed over the high altar of the church of "Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli."»
