PRIMARY LITURGICAL FEAST OF THE DAY: Purificação Fest or Candlar Saibinnicem Fest, Festa da Nossa Senhora da Candelaria or Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Leviticus xii), & the Feast of the Holy Encounter (or Meeting or Hypapante) with Saints Ana & Simeon (Luke ii, 22-40).

«22 And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord: 23 As it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord: 24 And to offer a sacrifice, according as it is written in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons: 25 And behold there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, & this man was just & devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel; & the Holy Ghost was in him. 26 And he had received an answer from the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the (Anointed) Christ of the Lord. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when his parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, 28 He also took him into his arms, & blessed God, & said: 29 Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word, in peace; 30 Because my eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: 32 A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, & the glory of thy people Israel. 33 And his father and mother were wondering at those things which were spoken concerning him. 34 And Simeon blessed them, & said to Mary his mother: Behold this child is set for the fall, & for the resurrection of many in Israel, & for a sign which shall be contradicted; 35 And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed. 36 And there was one Ana, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser; she was far advanced in years, & had lived with her husband seven years from her virginity. 37 And she was a widow until fourscore and four years; who departed not from the temple, by fastings & prayers serving night and day. 38 Now she, at the same hour, coming in, confessed to the Lord; & spoke of Him to all that looked for the redemption of Israel. 39 And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their city Nazareth. 40 And the child grew, & waxed strong, full of wisdom; & the grace of God was in him.» Luke ii, 22-40. 

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY: 

The Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, called by the Greeks, the Hypapante (or Meeting) of the Lord, &, in England, Candlemas; most other cultures call this feast simply, "Purification."

At Rome, on the Salarian road, the passion of St. Apronian, a notary. Whilst he was yet a Gentile, and was leading St. Sisinius out of prison, to present him before the governor Laodicius, he heard a voice from Heaven saying, "Come ye, the blessed of my Father, possess the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world." At once he believed, was baptized, and after confessing our Lord, received sentence of death.

Also, at Rome, the holy martyrs Fortunatus, Felician, Firmus and Candidus.

At Caesarea, in Palestine, St. Cornelius, a centurion, whom the blessed Apostle Peter baptized, and raised to the episcopal dignity in that city.

At Orleans, the holy bishop Flosculus.

At Canterbury, in England, the birthday of St. Lawrence, bishop, who succeeded St. Augustine in the government of that church, and converted the king himself to the faith.

Menology Entry for December 16: (Crowned icon of Our Lady of the Raft). Our Lady of Almadia , Spanish, or  Madonna della Madia , Italian, for " Our Lady  of the Raft:" «Bishop Romuald  began work on a new Cathedral in the city of Monopoli in Apulia in Italy in 1107 A.D., but it was halted for the lack of roof beams. In the early morning of December 16, 1117 A.D., Our Lady thrice appeared to a parishioner Mercurius, at night, instructing him to advise Romuald that the needed wood beams had arrived in the harbor, & each time, Romuald dismissed Mercurius as deluded; a 4th time, Mercurius visited the harbor, & saw a raft floating, & once again rushed to Romuald, insisting that he had now himself seen the wood in the harbor. A Greek Icon of Our Lady was found on the raft.
